World’s Famous Cyclists: Eddy Merckx & Cadel Evans

Cycling is not only a hobby but also a popular sport in the world. There are many famous cyclists worldwide, of which Eddy Merckx and Cadel Evans are some of the best ones.

1/ Eddy Merckx

Born on June 17, 1945, Eddy Merckx is one of the most professional cyclists in Belgium. He had an active childhood and involved in a variety of sports such as football, boxing, among others.

At the age of three or four, Eddy Merckx started cycling and procured his first racing license in 1961. He began focusing on cycling when attending school. After that, he dropped out of school to pursue this passion of cycling.

During his career, he is known as an iconic figure in the world of bike riding and cycle racing. Having dominated the sport for over a decade, Eddy Merckx was referred to as “Cycling God” and “The Cannibal.”

He has so far won at five Tours De France, five Giro d’Italias, three World Championships, and seven Milan–San Remos.

Eddy Merckx has hit unequalled record in the sport with a total of 525 victories. He has also broken the World Hour Record with an unparalleled record distance of 49.431 kilometers.

2/ Cadel Evans

Born on February 14, 1977, Cadel Evans is an Australian professional cyclist. When he was young, he attended Eltham High School in Melbourne and developed his interest in skateboarding.

However, he then won a scholarship to attend the Australian Institute of Sport where he joined the mountain bike program.

During his career of cycling, Cadel Evans was named the Australian Cyclist of the Year three times in 2006, 2007, and 2009. Notably, this exceptional cyclist is the victory at the 2011 Tour de France, one of the greatest-ever achievements.

On June 10, 2013, he was made a member in the General Division of the Order of Australia.
